Zone 3-7 Full Sun Low Water Sandy Soil

   

The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is native to grassy and open areas from sea level to 2,000m (6,500 feet) altitude in the western United States. The flowers are solitary on long stems, silky-textured, with four petals, each petal 2-6 cm long and broad; their color ranges from yellow to orange, and flowering is from February to September. It is perennial in mild parts of its native range, and annual in colder climates; growth is best in full sun and sandy, well-drained, poor soil. It is drought-tolerant, self-seeding, and easy to grow in gardens.

The Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) is a hardy perennial, and once established should flower for many years. It will grow in a wide range of soils, and can easily reach a height of about 8 ft. The flowers are a range of colours from white to dark red, including pink, yellow and orange. Different colours prefer different soils. The darker red variety seems to favour sandy soils, while the lighter colour seems to favour clay soils. The plants are easily grown from seed, and readily self-seed. However, tender plants, whether young from seed or from old stock, may be wiped out by slugs and snails.

Hemerocallis minor, is also known as Dwarf day lily, Grassleaf Lily. It is a member of the relatively small genus Hemerocallis. The plant grows up to 0.5 m high. Its wide flowers have as strong powerful scent, reminiscent of honeysuckle. The flower consists of three petals and three sepals, collectively called tepals, each with a midrib in the same or in a contrasting color. The centermost section of the flower, called the throat, has usually a different and contrasting color. There are six stamens, each with a two-lobed anther. After pollination, the flower forms a pod.

The genus Hibiscus comprises plants also commonly called hibiscus and less widely known as rosemallow. The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, ranging from white to pink, red, purple or yellow, and from 4-15 cm broad.The color of the Hibiscus grows darker as it ages. The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seeds in each lobe, which are released when the capsule splits open at maturity.

Polemonium, commonly called Jacob's ladder, is a genus of about 25 species of flowering plants in the family Polemoniaceae, native to cool temperate to arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and also in the southern Andes in South America. Many of the species grow at high altitudes in mountains. They are perennial plants (rarely annual plants) growing 10–120 cm tall with bright green leaves divided into lance-shaped leaflets, and produce blue (rarely white or pink) flowers in the spring and summer.

Delphinium grandiflorum is also known as 'Blue Butterfly'. This plant is commonly used in household gardens and is a favorite of hummingbirds. This plant requires full sun but can also thrive in part sun assuming good soil conditions. This plant will reach 12-15" tall and blooms in the summer. The abundant, long-blooming flowers are ideal for cutting and look wonderful paired with pink or yellow flowers. This variety can withstand hot summers and dryer soil. Dead-heading this plant will encourage more blooming. Care must be taken with pets and small children as all parts of the plant are poisonous.

Coreopsis, common names include tickseed and calliopsis) is a genus of herbs in the family Asteraceae. Many of its 35 species are cultivated. Plant Coreopsis Baby Sun in full sun in fertile, well drained soil. Space new container grown plants 12" apart. Baby Sun tolerates short periods of drought well. Deadhead Coreopsis plants to extend flowering season. Baby Sun is great for borders and attracts butterflies.

The Shasta daisy (Leucanthemum x superbum) is a commonly grown herbaceous perennial plant with the classic daisy appearance of white petals (ray florets) around a yellow disc, similar to the Oxeye daisy Leucanthemum vulgare Lam. but larger. Formerly classified in the genus Chrysanthemum, these daisies were transferred to their own genus of Leucanthemum because they lack some traits of true Chrysanthemums. Shasta daisies are characterized by a distinct odor which some find unpleasant, which makes them unusual amongst flowers.

Black-eyed Susan is a common wildflower. It has beautiful flowers with a large black to brown disk protruding from the center of the flower giving the flower head a three dimensional appearance. Black-Eyed Susan is an excellent choice for the wildflower garden. Deer and Elk generally won't browse on them.

Plant Purple Magnus Echinacea in full sun in fertile well drained soil. Purple Magnus tolerates most soil types and drought quite well. Space new container grown plants 24" apart. Echinacea can be a prolific self seeder. Cut back spent flower stems to promote re-flowering and to prevent the plant from spreading. Purple Magnus's large 7" flowers attract butterflies and are excellent for cutting.

Plant Variegated Japanese Sedge Grass in a shady location in wet fertile soil. The nicely variegated grass is a good choice for planting near a water feature. This small compact grass can be used as a marginal for water gardening. Variegated Japanese Sedge Grass also grows well in containers. Space container grown plants 12" - 16" apart.

The yellow grove bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosulcata) is generally described as a Perennial Shrub or Graminoid. This Monocot (monocotyledon) is not native to the U.S. This evergreen bamboo has slender young green culms with a pronounced yellow groove found on opposite sides of the cane. Leaves are a soft green color. A running bamboo with strong vertical growth. Full to partial sun. Fast-growing to 15 to 25 feet high. Division. Running.

A fragrant, lacy plant grown for it's silvery foliage. It is also a nice accent to fresh or dried flower arrangements or in containers of annuals. This plant tolerates some drought, some salt and will grow in moist soil but prefers a well-drained or sandy soil with a pH of neutral to slightly alkaline (6.8-7.7). Good for the border or as a ground cover.

Butterfly bush is a deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub with a weeping form that can get 6-12 ft (1.8-3.7 m) tall and have a spread of 4-15 ft (1.2-4.6 m). The tiny flowers are irresistible to butterflies. They are borne in long, 8-18 in (20-45.7 cm), cone-shaped clusters that droop in a profusion of color and stay abuzz with winged, nectar-feeding insects from late spring until first frost in autumn. The flower clusters can be so profuse that they cause the branches to arch even more. The flowers of many cultivars are sweetly fragrant. Flower colors may be purple, white, pink, or red, and they usually have an orange throat in the center.

Plant Climbing Hydrangeas in full sun to partial shade in compost rich, well drained soil. "Climbing Hydrangea" are slow to establish, usually 3 to 5 years but once it does it grows fairly rapidly. After several years in the garden Climbing Hydrangea can produce large clusters of creamy white flowers during late spring or early summer. The flowers are quite fragrant. Climbing Hydrangea is an excellent choice growing on trellises, arbors, gazebos, tree trunks, or walls.

Scarlet Meidiland is one of a series of hardy groundcover roses bred to bloom continiously and be disease resistant. It spreads over 6 feet and grows about 3 feet tall. Wonderful in mass plantings on a bank or in a bed. Small semi-double flowers of 3" are born in many clusters and are accompained by wonderful glossy deep green foliage. Clusters of red hips give a great show to the fall & winter garden.

Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) is a deciduous small tree or large shrub widespread in the foothills and lower mountain elevations of the central southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It typically grows at altitudes of 1,000–3,000 meters above sea level, where precipitation averages between 30–60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches) per year. It is often called scrub oak, oak brush or white oak.

Acer grandidentatum (Bigtooth Maple) is a species of maple native to interior western North America, occurring in scattered populations from western Montana in the United States south to Coahuila in northern Mexico. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 10–15 m tall and a trunk of 20–35 cm diameter. The bark is dark brown to gray, with narrow fissures and flat ridges creating plate-like scales; it is thin and easily damaged. It commonly grows in limestone soils but can adapt to a wide range of well-drained soils, from sand to clays to even white limestone areas. It is occasionally planted as an ornamental tree, valued for its drought tolerance and ability to grow in rocky landscapes.

New Mexican Locust (Robinia neomexicana), is a shrub or small tree native to the southwestern United States. It grows to 5–10 m tall (rarely to 15 m) with bristly shoots. The leaves are 10–15 cm long, pinnate with 7–15 leaflets; they have a pair of sharp, reddish-brown thorns at the base. The flowers are showy and white or pink, produced in spring or early summer in dense racemes 5–10 cm long that hang from the branches near the ends.The fruits are brown bean-like pods with bristles like those on the shoots.

Bristlecone Pine trees grow to 15m; trunk to 1m diam., strongly tapering, twisted; crown rounded, flattened (sheared), or irregular. Bark gray to red-brown, shallowly fissured, with long, flat, irregular ridges. Branches contorted; twigs pale red-brown, aging gray, puberulent, young branches resembling long bottlebrushes because of persistent leaves..
